Dr. Dolitte - Opens Sept. 11th
The wonderful tale of Dr. John Dolittle -- who can talk (and sing!) to animals -- leads to exciting adventures and things you’ve never seen before when Ojai ACT presents this classic musical Sept. 11 through Oct. 4.
Plus, you can ‘talk’ to the animals after each show, and an hour before each Saturday matinee the Ojai Valley Humane Society features adoptable pets.
As for the musical, “It’s fun, it’s funny, the animals are charming and it’s also a good love story,” said Phil Nemy who plays the doctor.
The music was written by Leslie Bricusse, whose well-known songs include James Bond themes and musicals such as “Willy Wonka,” “Stop the World -- I Want to Get Off” and “The Roar of the Greasepaint -- The Smell of the Crowd,” among many others.
For “Dolittle,” Bricusse wrote the Oscar winning song “Talk to the Animals,” along with “Something in Your Smile” and “Where are the Words?” This is a clue that the stage musical is largely based on the Rex Harrison movie (1967), not the Eddie Murphy series. Greg Spaulding leads the songs on keyboards.
The local production features award-winning Director Gai Jones, who said “the animal and human characters create an enchanting world … taking the audience on a journey from a small English village to the far corners of the world.” Herb Hemming is the producer and Sheryl-Jo Bedal created the costumes.
Dr. Dolittle came from a series of books written by Hugh Lofting who first published in 1920, and the books were so popular they were transformed into plays, a musical and six movie versions.
The cast features adults and youth; they are: Arshan Barati, Sofia Burke, Christina Columbo, Brittany Danyel, Ezra Eells, Nelson Fox, Douglas Friedlander, Louis Graham, Armando Hernandez, Sophie Massey, Marisa Miculian, Phil Nemy and Mason Rothermal.
The ensemble includes Bodhi Bourbon, Siena Cherry, Amber Hodge, Lisa Gosselin, Alora Gregory, Clara Gregory, Addysyn Johnson, Coree Kotula, Ula Leavitt, Maya Mauderres,
Tabitha McComas, Aly Stelman, Marin Valerio, Paloma Valerio, Robert Weed, Steve Weed and Beth Wilson.
